How Is Anju Seth Writing A New Chapter In IIM Calcutta's History
21st Century is witnessing a dramatic change when it comes to women in corporate sector. Women walk shoulder to shoulder with their men counterpart and are no more limited to kitchen and homes. Corporate houses and other organizations have seen a steady increase in number of women employees. Having said that it is still a rarity to see women in top management posts. Going by the trend, world wishes to see more women on top and maybe that's why whenever a woman does well, the news is celebrated and cherished, just like this one.
First in 57 years
IIM Calcutta was established on 13 November 1961 and in it's 57 years of existence, this esteemed institution for the first time will have a woman director Anju Seth.
IIM Calcutta was hoping to go for a foreign academic as its director. The institute’s search panel had shortlisted three candidates, all currently teaching in US institutions — Anju Seth; Suresh Ramanathan of Mays School of Business, Texas A&M University, and Jayant Kale, teaching at D’Amore-McKim School of Business, North Eastern University.
An easy choice
After a lot of deliberation, the board unanimously chose Anju Seth as its new director. A peek into her resume' will prove why she was a unanimous choice.
Prof. Seth, who has a career spanning over 25 years, is an alumni of IIM-Calcutta (1978) and after that she completed her PhD from the university of Michigan in 1988. Soon she joined University of Illinois as a Professor of Business Administration.
In 2008, she joined Virginia Tech and till recently was holding the position of Pamplin Professor of Management in Virginia Tech. She is also on the editorial board of many scholarly journals. She has even won numerous awards for her teaching and research.
A big honor
IIM C board chairperson Shri. Krishna Kulkarni gave an official statement,
We are indeed delighted that Anju will be the first woman director of the IIM-C. She was the unanimous choice of the search cum selection committee and the board of governors.
Professor Anju Seth has officially took over from Saibal Chattopadhyay on Monday but she will take over the charge only after a month. In an interview she said,
It is an honor and privilege to be appointed to serve IIM Calcutta in the position of director. I look fwd to working with faculty, staff, students, governors and all other stake holders to build on the institute strong foundations and accomplish to new heights of eminence.
In the mean time, Prof Leena Chatterjee will officiate as an Acting Director. According to her it's a step in the right direction.
All of us are extremely happy about the decision. It is a good thing that women are now being appointed in key positions and leadership roles. The fact that she is an alumnus makes it even more fitting. I have been at the institute for 34 years and have seen the presence of women increase in the field — especially in terms of female students. Traditionally, one of our main pools is engineering. How many women, though, take up engineering? Having said that, there was a time when 5 per cent of students here were women, and now there are 30 percent women students at IIM Calcutta. One of our deans is a woman and I am one of two women members of the faculty board that represents the Institute. So yes, we are hopeful .
We at KenFolios, hope to see many more women taking up leadership roles to fill the gender gap in organizations. So that the news in future is not about women leaders but just about leaders.
