Even China Couldn't Beat Us When It Came To The Use Of E-Rickshaws

Although China beats every other country in terms of its population and Olympic medals, but recently India’s stats on number of e-vehicles in use left behind not just china but every other country. It was the use of e-rickshaws, which was found to be the most for public transportation. India beat every one with a margin so huge, that it will surprise you.

Revealing report

A recent report by A.T Kearney, a consultancy firm, revealed that in India, nearly 11,000 e-rickshaws were hitting the road every month. This on further calculation brought up a total of 1.5 million e-rickshaws running on Indian roads. When this number was compared against the number of e-rickshaws running in China, it was found that India’s stats surpassed the total number of electric vehicles sold in China since 2011, let alone the total number of e-rickshaws. This number is also expected to see a surge of 9% by 2021 making it a 1.5 billion dollar market.

Limitless possibilities

There are both economical and environmental possibilities for an e-rickshaw. Being battery power it doesn’t contribute to air pollution and noise pollution. Ever since it has gained popularity, employment opportunities have also spiked. Not just giant manufacturers but small third parties are also involved in assembling the components imported from China, giving rise to new economic opportunities. Even India’s well known start-up Ola has planned to employ 10,000 e-rickshaws by April 2019.

India needs to focus on electrifying two-wheelers and three-wheelers,” Says Amitabh Kant, CEO of NITI Aayog.

The government is currently focusing on promoting electric vehicles to be included in public transportation and fleets, with emphasis on two-wheelers, three-wheelers, taxis and buses. Seeing all the possible benefits, the Ministry of Finance has also decided to support this by sanctioning a sum of 600 million dollars over five years to provide better subsidies on electric buses.

Future of e-vehicles

With these many benefits, e-vehicles can surely contribute a lot in upcoming future as they will be key weapons in our battle against pollution. It can become an even bigger market of opportunities if subsidies get better and financing get easier. This in long run can boost nation’s economy. They have the potential to revolutionize the whole automobile industry given that the policies are made carefully and smartly. Still giant vehicles like heavy duty trucks and high passenger density vehicles are not electronic, but with development at this pace, these challenges will also be tackled in near future.

"We will not stop until every car on the road is electric," says Elon Musk.
