All That You Wanted To Know About The Indian- American Who Won USA's Highest Honor for Anti-Human Trafficking Initiative
Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the world. Human trafficking also known as Flesh trade, is the trade of humans for the purpose of forced labour, sexual slavery, commercial sexual exploitation and even in some case removal of organs. Believe it or not, it is one of the major concerns in USA. The problem of human trafficking in this part of the planet is more about forced labor, domestic and agricultural slavery and commercial sex trafficking.
According to the International Labour Organization, illicit activity from forced labor generates annual profits of $150 billion, which as per safeamerica exceeds combined profits of the top three Silicon Valley companies. In USA, most notorious states when it comes to human trafficking are California, Texas and Georgia.The 2016 Global Slavery Index estimated that approximately 57,700 U.S. citizens and immigrants are victims of human trafficking including young children, teenagers, men and women.
Lately one could see coming up of good laws and even effective implementation when it comes to Flesh Trade and the person who played a major part in this is a woman of Indian-American origin, Minal Patel Davis. Minal, currently serves as the Special Advisor to Mayor Sylvester Turner on Human Trafficking, Houston, Texas. She also manages 42 member task force which helps in coming up with ideas to combat human trafficking and creating awareness among the locals.
Minal, who did her B.A. in Political Science with a minor in English from New York University and a J.D./M.B.A. from the University of Connecticut, her tryst with anti-human trafficking started in August 2014, when Former Mayor Annise Parker appointed her into the Houston’s human trafficking task force. She was soon promoted as the Chair of the task force in January 2015.
Her Work Towards Combating Human Trafficking
Minal is the name behind the local impact on human trafficking in the 4th largest city in the U.S. She is currently involved in developing as well as implementing Mayor Turner’s Anti-Human Trafficking Strategic Plan, which is the first of its kind in a US city, it is a comprehensive municipal response to human trafficking. She has always been passionate about anti-human trafficking efforts she has no qualms in helping other cities to combat this menace. She has been very vocal about the cause at both national as well as international levels, pushing them to adopt City of Houston’s approach.
Not only that, she has also been speaker at the United Nations World Humanitarian Summit, United States Conference of Mayors and even travels to different countries to discuss and raise awareness about human trafficking with government officials.
Because of her tireless efforts,on October 17, 2018 Minal was honored with a Presidential award by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo- in the presence of President Donald Trump- for her extraordinary contribution towards combating human trafficking in Houston. Minal who looked visibly elated after winning the country’s highest honor in the field said to PTI, "My parents came here from India. I was the first one in my family born in the United States, so to end up in the Mayor’s office a few years ago, and then to now end up in the White House, it was unbelievable."
The City of Houston too congratulated Minal on Twitter.
We hope she succeeds in her pursuit and helps in putting a stop to this modern form of inhuman slavery.
