Kerala College Girl Who Sold Fish For Survival Has Her Bullies Eating Their Words With Her Actions!

A few months back in Kerala, a young girl was spotted by major news houses selling fish in her college uniform. For a few days, the public was all in awe of this girl’s grit and confidence when her incredible story of survival went viral. But then came the criticism. “Discerning” cyber bullies trolled her left, right and center, accusing her of staging it for publicity and leaving her completely shattered and humiliated. This girl is Hanan Hamid, the sole breadwinner of her family, who has taken the media by storm again. This time, however, it is for a very different reason. She has stunned the nation by donating the 1.5 lakhs that she had received from her well-wishers to the victims of the Kerala deluge.

Hanan is a third-year BSc Chemistry student of Al Azar College in the Idukki district of Kerala. Dealt a tough hand by fate, poverty and hard labor have been her companions from childhood. Her father is understood to be a Malaysian citizen who came to God’s Own Country for business and later settled down there. Things took a turn for the worse when her mother became sick- the father abandoned them, leaving the struggling family to fend for themselves. Since then, Hanan has taken it upon herself to support her ailing mother and younger brother by doing a few odds and ends after class. She puts food on the table and also finances her education by working as a flower seller, anchoring for small functions and, of course, selling fish in a makeshift stall in the local market. When many called her ‘fake’ and’ attention-seeking’ on the social media, kind people rushed to her aid, shelling out money from their pockets to help. The 21-year-old has now generously handed over the hefty amount she thus received to the Chief Minister’s relief fund.

“I am merely giving back what I received from the people. Now they are all suffering and it is the least I can do,” Hanan says. “On the second day of trolling, I started receiving money in 500s and 2000s into my account. This added up to Rs. 1.5 lakh. Now the people who helped me are facing huge losses and I want to give back their money,” she adds.

Today, Kerala is reeling under torrential rainfall, heavy flooding, and landslides, the likes of which have not been seen in over a century. The crisis has claimed the lives of more than 350 people and has left over 3 lakh people displaced and scrambling for life in relief camps. About 20,000 crores of loss have been estimated by the state till now, and the magnitude of the disaster has brought forward many helping hands from across the world. For someone like Hanan, who does not even have a house to call her own, it takes incredible courage and self-sacrifice to do such a thing. This girl with the heart of gold has rendered us all speechless with her generosity. She has become a model for the society by killing cruelty with pure, disarming kindness.
