The Indian Army is celebrated for the valour and bravery its soldiers show. At every front, soldiers, across borders, display strength and courage in the darkest hours. Driven by their love for their country, countless lives have been given up and sacrificed.
Yet, most of these heroes remain unsung and unheard of. Very few can name the soldiers who have been martyred while protecting us. Among all the battles which India has faced, we have lost innumerable lives.
One such soldier is Bachan Singh who served in the Kargil war of 1999 as a lance naik in the 2nd battalion of Rajputana Rifles. He was shot at Tololing in Kargil on the night of June 12, 1999. He left behind his wife and his two young sons, the oldest who was just six-year-old.
The loss felt by his family was tremendous especially for his wife who lost a loving husband and his sons who lost their father and role model. However, his life and the sacrifice he made gave them both inspiration and strength to carry on and live their lives in devotion to their father and their country.
Nineteen years later, Bachan’s eldest son, Hitesh Kumar, has now followed his father’s footsteps and has joined the Indian Army. He recently passed out from the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, and has been commissioned as Lieutenant in the Rajputana Rifles, the same battalion his father was part of.
Shortly after his commencement parade, Hitesh went and paid tribute to his father at Bachan’s memorial in the civil lines area of Muzaffarnagar. In an interview, he spoke of his dream to serve his country with pride and honesty. Both his parents dreamt of serving the country and passed that dream onto their sons. Hitesh’s younger brother is also preparing to join the Indian Army
This loving story fills our hearts with awe, inspiration and pride. Hitesh, a loving and devoted son has followed his father’s footsteps to serve our nation. Patriotism and bravery clearly runs in his blood and we as his fellow citizens thank and applaud him for his service to this country. They survive through the harshest of conditions with minimal means and resources, without a word of complaint.
