Sometimes, you find life’s most important lessons at places you don’t look. It might be from a stranger you happen to meet, a random place or a stray animal. The lesson hits you hard and stays with you for the rest of your life.
Dilip Kumar, known for his great acting skills and performances, is considered an icon for many. At the peak of his success, Dilip had been so accustomed to fame that his vision of the world grew narrower on him. On one such day while he was travelling on a flight something happened that opened his eyes wide and taught him the reality of life.
As he entered the airport, his fans were left dumbstruck. While some flocked to meet him, others thanked their luck from a distance. Regardless, Dilip caught attention from all corners. Acknowledging all his fans, he made his way towards the flight.
As he took his seat on the flight, he noticed a man seated right beside him, unfazed by his presence. The old man was sipping his tea quietly while reading the newspaper, and occasionally peeking out the window. Dilip, who was at the peak of his career, was curious to know how his fellow passenger couldn’t recognise him. Striking a conversation, he asked the man if he watched movies.
“Oh, very few. I did watch one many years ago,” the man replied, to which Dilip said that he worked in movies.
“Oh, that’s nice. What do you do,” he questioned.
“I am an actor,” said Dilip.
“Oh, wonderful,” replied the man with a smile.
They continued to travel with the quiet company of each other and Dilip wondered who this man was. As they landed, he got up and shook hands to say goodbye.
“It was good to travel with you. By the way, my name is Dilip Kumar.” And as the old man introduced himself, Dilip was left astounded.
“Thank you, I am JRD Tata,” the man said as he bid goodbye.
Dilip was so moved by this incident, he wrote about it in his autobiography. Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata taught Dilip a valuable lesson, one that everyone could use. No matter how great you are, there will always be someone who will be greater than you. So stay humble.
